This is an unbelievably astonishing series which has yet to really receive its due from American anime fans. The unusual Japanese title is “Tenshi ni Narumon!”, which roughly translates to, “I’m Gonna Be an Angel!” The title is appropriate, but at the same time exquisite erroneous. This series is definitely NOT your run-of-the-mill cutesy kid anime. While it does have more than its fraction of kawaii elements, it also has a very deep and very shaded subplot which is foreshadowed in the opening seconds of the first epsiode. This darkness erupts in the middle episodes, and it practically explodes in the final record arc.

Describing the present is a small tricky. It features a high school boy named Yuusuke and a girl named Noelle, who honest happens to wear a halo. As the series starts, Yuusuke is on his first day of living by himself, and he’s quite ecstatic about his freedom. On his first day alone, and on the method to school that morning, no less, he “stumbles” across Noelle in the woods (okay, he falls off of a bank and lands on her) . She is naked and unconscious, for reasons that are too complicated to clarify. Suffice it to say that when Yuusuke lands on her, he accidentally kisses her, and this of course wakes her up. She immediately assumes that Yuusuke is now her husband (so will her family – more on that later) . Yuusuke runs away in a blind anxiety, but his problems have objective begun. So has the series, in fact – all of this takes plot in honest the opening minutes of the first episode!

By the extinguish of the first episode, we learn that Noelle is now a student in Yuusuke’s class, and that her “family” has moved themselves (and their entire house!) to the place where Yuusuke’s house had been. We also learn that Yuusuke has a crush on another girl (Natsumi), even though she won’t spare him the time of day because of several poor and embarrassing incidents. It is during his attempt to apologize for one such incident that we hear Yuusuke compare Natsumi to an angel: Noelle, upon overhearing this, later pledges to become an angel for Yuusuke. The series centers upon this pledge and how everyone handles the consequences it creates.

The dramatic side of the series is excellently offset by its comedic side. By far, the funniest allotment of the display involves Noelle’s “family.” They’re from the “Demon World,” and they can only be described as a contaminated between The Munsters, Bewitched, and a Fisher-Price commercial. The father is especially droll in the unusual Japanese series: he’s an mountainous Frankenstein’s monster who wears glasses and a business suit, and he speaks in an *extremely* polite Japanese dialect. The mother and grandmother are witches, the brother is a vampire, the runt sister is a angry scientist in training, and the immense sister is invisible. The whole family is extremely naive as to the ways of the “human world,” which invariably results in danger for all (usually at the expense of the humans interested) . As unusual as these characters may seem, they’re tranquil when compared to the “villains” of the point to. All of the characters are eventually developed to a degree that you normally won’t peek in a series like this, and none of them (especially the “villains”) are what they would at first seem to be.

The first 7 or 8 episodes (out of 26 total) are heavily laden with slapstick, but like I mentioned earlier there is a very deep set that stirs slowly throughout. There are two major anecdote arcs later on in the series that must be seen to be believed: one happens lawful in the middle, and another that spans the last 5 episodes. The ending arc is especially impressive, and is in fact the only fraction of anime that has ever moved me emotionally. Seriously – it is REALLY that superb.

In short, this is a series that you can’t afford to miss, and one that is waddle to go down as a classic of the genre. Incredibly reliable stuff, and a must have for any serious anime fan.

Tenshi ni Narumon (I’m Gonna Be An Angel) is a vast series. It has everything from manic hyperness, dancing and singing to a distinguished calmer, darker perspective in the later episodes.

This DVD is astonishing. A broad dub track, in addition to the origional Japanese. Also, two nice sets of subtitles – one a more literal translation, and one more processed for those not wanting to mediate half in japanese.

The DVD contains the first five episodes of the 26 episode series. I personnally can’t wait for the next DVD.

The animation is high quality, the state and thunder acting are awesome. If only more anime translation companies do in this considerable pain. Aid this improbable company by buying this DVD.

When IP Man first came to dvd I got the first print edition and have watched this spicy movie now 6 times and it is tranquil worth a explain search for! I now have the HK 2-disc special edition and this is the one to acquire with the special features! This movie is about the life and times of IP Man, celebrated for his style of Chinese martial art – Sail Chun, which specializes in end quarter combat, concentrating on centerline attack and defense; Donnie Yen is an marvelous martial artist and it shows in this film! I won’t give away the movie, objective go and seize this astonishing movie, it has been compared to Doughty, which I have seen, and it is a tremendous movie also, but this one, IP Man is my approved of all my martial arts movies!

A stately tall budget period biopic, loaded with well choreographed, shot and edited fight scenes, of the martial artist widely credited for bringing Cruise Chun kung fu from southern China to Hong Kong in the early twentieth century, and whose concepts and training ideas were adapted by his most noted student, Bruce Lee, who promoted those ideas as, “the scheme of the intercepting fist,” in his book, “The Tao of Jeet Kun Do.” The film clearly emulates the scope of the Jet Li film, “Mettlesome” – which was about the redemption of the martial arts fighter, Hua Yuan Jia, who (at least in the heavily fictionalized “Courageous”) overcame a egotistical brutality to leave late a similarly impressive legacy in the worldwide spread of the JingWu school of martial arts and general physical education (a kind of YMCA offering kung fu training as well as other forms of physical education in several countries) . The film is also mighty for Donnie Yen’s atypically restrained performance as Ip Man, a wealthy martial artist, who lived in a town filled with safe teachers, and resisted the Japanese colonial government in southern China, when they pressured him to shriek japanese soldiers, resulting, ultimately in the historical Ip Man having to skim occupied China, and emigrate to Hong Kong, where he eventually began teaching to create a living (something most martial arts film fans might know going into the film) .

Buy,Download, Or Stream Ip Man! Click Here

However lacking the character arc Ronny Yu and the makers of “Plucky” imposed on the life legend of Hua Yuan Jia (critics rightly point out Donnie Yen’s Ip Man is nothing less than a living saint, and doesn’t evolve at all as a character throughout the film) the filmmakers wisely design up for it by developing secondary characters drawn from the community Ip Man lives in before the Japanese invasion. Some are forced to become collaborators with the occupation government, others are forced into matches with Japanese martial artists, others join tongs like the Axe Gang, which preyed on chinese civilians during the long period of the occupation and the chinese civil war. All of these lives intersect with the newly dispossessed and impoverished Ip Man as he tries to survive, feed and defend his young wife and child, against the depredations forced on the southern chinese by the Japanese occupation, and eventually finds himself taking on challenge matches against japanese fighters, at first, to acquire food for his family, and then later, as a matter of principle.

That aside, the film is chock chubby of good-to-great martial arts fight scenes, including capable (and some not so kindly) matches between members of the Fo Shan Mountain’s colossal community of martial artists before the Japanese invasion, and increasingly desperate battles afterwards, between struggling workers and gangsters, starving martial artists and japanese soldiers, and publicized challenge matches against Japanese martial artists area up to further humiliate the oppressed population. Though I do deem fight choreographer Sammo Hung, and Yen didn’t quite manage to net across the efficiency and sheer finesse exhibited by genuine masters of the style (possibly better seen in two earlier fly chun-based films he directed, “Warriors Two] and “Prodigal Son”), Hung deserves a lot of credit for choreographing the increasingly brutal fight scenes in a plot that shows how Hover Chun differs from other styles of chinese and japanese martial arts. (A considerable more detailed discussion of the major fight scenes is up at kungfucinema.com http://www.kungfucinema.com/review-ip-man-2008-5481 for those with a strong interest in the technical side of these things.) I particularly liked the performances of Yen (again, far more disciplined and restrained than usual), Louis Fan as a northern stylist, Hiroyuki Ikeuchi as a Japanese General, Xing Yu and Chen Zhihui, as Fo Shan Mountain martial artists.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Ip Man! Click Here

“Ip Man,” is definitely worth seeing, and while it it doesn’t quite match the dramatic strength of “Daring,” the writers and filmmakers have crafted an curious enough, well produced chronicle to actually sit through the segments between the fight scenes, which is saying a lot these days. “Ip Man, Piece I” has made radiant serious money (a sequel covering Ip Man’s years in Hong Kong has been greenlit – I’m already looking forward to seeing who wins the sizable fight over who gets to play the young Bruce Lee) and I hope, along with “Heroic” it leads to more large budget period kung fu films with (hopefully) better and more entertaining narratives than the usual “theatre of revenge” fare. Judging from all the tall budget period war movies (like “Red Cliff I and II,” “Three Kingdoms: Resurrection of the Dragon,” “The Warlords,” “Seven Swords,” “An Empress and The Warriors,” “A Battle of Wits” coming out of China these days, it’s sure the Chinese are willing to expend the money … there’s a friendly chance we’ll also earn more films like “Doughty” and “Ip Man.” Certainly there are no lack of candidates, (Wong Fei Hung, Yang Luchun, the Chen Family, Dong Haichuan, Yueh Fei, .. the list goes on) for cinematic canonization in the long, long history of Chinese martial arts.

Betting On Auto Racing: What Are The Odds?

September 27th, 2010

Gambling comes in several forms and just when you thought that betting on horse races went out of style; there comes a new fad that lots of people take into account just as fun. Indeed, betting on people who are involved inside auto race sport has become just as common, if not additional popular, than individuals betting on their horse races. But is there any advantage to betting about the drivers with the cars from the auto racing industry? Center caps what’s even more interesting will be the simple fact that a lot of similarities and differences lie between the activity of betting on horse races and automobile races. But see for yourself whether you ought to bet on someone involved in auto rushing, and also the benefit just may possibly fall your way.

Similarities with Horse Race Bets

Just as horse race betting was really popular just ten to twenty years ago, the betting of horse races has now turned into automobile rushing betting, which is no much better than merely gambling. The principal similarity that automotive race bets have with those who bet on horse races could be the simple fact that there is no basic method to know who’s going to win the race. Just as horses are too unpredictable to bet on, so are humans who have auto-raced for a long time. The driver on the vehicle may well be having an “off” day, just as any horse can as well.

Another way, however, that automobile rushing betting is similar to horse race betting stands out as the fact that there’s a entire market out for it. Indeed, there are lots of those who think about automotive race to be even much more critical than horse racing, and many individuals in the exact same circles that bet on horse racing are now betting about the drivers that engage in automotive race.

Key Difference with Automotive Rushing

One on the finest things about betting on car race, though, is that humans are more predictable than horses ever might be. Just think about the NASCAR predicament: when someone arrives in earliest place it’s rare that the spot is at any time moved. Unless the automobile and driver of automobile rushing change in some substantial way, the exact same drivers of the automotive race business continue to keep their essential status more than time. This entire circumstance makes betting on automobile rushing not just far more predictable, but also simpler to win.

But think about the circumstance of automotive racing bets when a bet is placed on a car or truck and driver who has come in earliest position consistently for the past half of a year. Even nevertheless it can be very likely that the person who has arrive in earliest position will do so again for many times more than, it really is also extremely most likely that a new vehicle and driver will effortlessly beat out and win more than the regular winner with the automobile race.

From the end, is it ever truly beneficial to bet on any in the automobile racing that goes on, or is it actually advantageous to bet on any from the horse races that go on? Even though there are folks who do find those times that they win a jackpot with the races that they bet on, much more frequently than not they are sorely disappointed when their vehicle rushing driver has lost to their colleagues. For this reason, the odds of winning bets on automobile rushing, even although they seem most likely, can in fact be slim to none!

The fourth Fred & Ginger (F&G) movie, Top Hat is considered by many to be the quintessential one and is my personal popular. In the Top Hat musical number, Fred cleverly uses his gentleman’s cane as a “machine gun.” And the ever-so-tender cheek to cheek number where he is singing and dancing with Ginger makes me feel like I am dancing in heaven as well. A deleted scene in some prints in which Bates (Eric Blore) insults a policeman, is show in this DVD.

A running commentary with Ava Astaire McKenzie (daughter) includes background information about the supporting actors and trivia, such as the significance of the ring Fred wears in the film. And even though Ginger rides the horse in this movie, we learn that Fred is the right horse lover. Ava admits she does not know everything about her dad and his career, which adds to the authenticity of what she does know and contributes.

A behind-the-scenes examine, the featurette, “On Top: Inside the Success of Top Hat” explains many intricacies and attention to detail in the making of the movie. Nothing is left to chance. You will luxuriate in all the names in the opening credits. It includes interviews with Ava Astaire McKenzie, archivists, and biographers with a mix of F&G photographs and film clips. (Hasten time 18:20)

“Scrutinize the Birdie” is a comedy short with a young Bob Hope playing a prankster on a hover ship who himself gets “pranked.” It’s sort of a let down after Top Hat, so I am not obvious why it’s included on the same DVD. (B&W, Speed time 18:16)

“Page Miss Glory” (1936) is an former Merrie Melodies cartoon about the exploits around a bell boy in an upscale hotel. It has a touch of Busby Berkeley approach the destroy. (Hurry time 7:43)

Theatrical Trailer (Accelerate time 1:02)

Many times when the subject of old-time, classic movies comes up, my father inevitably brings up the epic of how as a child he was given a quater on his ninth birthday and sent off to a local Baltimore, movie theatre with his friends to view the now classic movie musical, “Top Hat”. Unbiased recently I purchased the DVD box region, “Astaire & Rogers Collection, Volume 1″. Naturally, the first disc I viewed was “Top Hat”. Well after seeing this disc, I now know, why my Dad over seventy years later, is calm talking about this unbelievable fragment of cinematic, movie magic. To paraphrase an outmoded Humphrey Bogart line, “this is the stuff that dreams are made of”. Where do you inaugurate with what makes this movie immense? You have to originate with the pure magic of Fred Astaire & Ginger Rogers working together. This film is splendid remarkable this duo’s creative peak. You have Fred Astaire acting, cracking jokes, singing and best of all DANCING! If you wish to ever to gape pure creative genuis at work, before your very eyes, then unprejudiced peer this man’s feet and body language. Astaire shows such elegance and grace, that he has now become the very definition of those words. As for Miss Rogers, her skills have been quite underrated in the past. You know the venerable cliche saying, “she could do anything he could do…but she could do it backwords (and in heels) “. It’s good! This pair’s artistry and creative gifts perfectly match each other. My personal celebrated moment in the movie is the extended dance sequence between the two during the song, “Cheek to Cheek”. In the begining of the scene, when Astaire sings “I’m in heaven…” and then repeats the phrase, you really do occupy him! The two dancers sail along the dance floor as though they are in a dream. When the music majestically swells and he dips her, there is truely a sense of romance and sensuality, that is completly overwelming. It really is a classic scene from movie history. Astaire & Rogers are joined by a classic cast of silly, character actors, who forever will go down in cinematic memory. There is Edward Everett Horton, who plays Astaire’s stuffy present producer. He is the ‘King of the droll, double-take’. His man-servant is played by the comical actor, Eric Blore, who reminds me of a school boy, who knows he’s played some sort of sportive prank. Horton’s wife is played by actress, Helen Broderick, who seems to have made an art fabricate out of delivering her lines with irony & sarcasm. Finally there is droll actor, Eric Rhodes with his hilariously method over the top, Italian accent (he puts Chico Marx to shame!) and his foppish ways. The songs in this film have now become accepted standards, that have become engrained in our culture’s musical consciousness. All are written by Composer, Irving Berlin and include classics such “Isn’t This a Fine Day”, “Top Hat, White Tie and Tails”, Cheek to Cheek” and “No Strings (I’m Adore Free) “. While countless performers have covered these songs, it is the Astaire & Rodgers renditions from this film, that is in our collective memory. Finally mention should be of the movies’ attractive costumes and especially the almost fantasy-like, art decco, stylized sets which seem to effortlessly transport the viewer to another world. Remember, this film was released during the height of the ‘Great Depression’. It was tough times for many movie patrons benefit then. Well, for one hour fourty minutes through the singing, dancing, comedy and the improbable visuals it must have made folks forget their troubles. These days I suspect this film can quiet work it’s fantastic movie magic! The DVD relate itself is crystal certain and highlights the exquisite B&W photography. The sound is O.K. for a film from 1935. Extras include a short featurette on the making of the film, commentary from Astaire’s daughter, a theatrical trailer, a Warner Bros. cartoon and a Bob Hope comedy short. For a night of immense escapist entertaiment, I highly recommend the classic film “Top Hat”! Dad certainly liked it!

The DVD Report

I began watching Sex and The City last year when I got the first season on DVD as a birthday indicate. TV shows on DVD always seemed like a astounding conception to me, so I began watching this series hoping to net something to indulge myself in. What I found was astounding. It only took me two days to gather through the first situation. I imediately rushed out to collect Season Two and watched that in about a week. Thankfully for me, it was only about a month or so until Season Three came out. I watched season 3 savoring it as though it were my last breath of air. Since then I have seen a few episodes from Season Four (mostly the extinguish of the season) and watched the disappointing 5th Season on HBO. I recently found out that you can download sex and the city episodes on Kazaa, but I’d rather wait and discover carrie & co. on the finest format available. I know my review wasn’t very valid as far as reviewing Season Four, but if you secure yourself coming across this and you haven’t ever seen Sex And The City, I hurry you to plunge whatever you’re doing and rob up the first season. It’s as splendid as everyone says it is. I can’t imagine anyone not being able to identify with one of these four characters, if not all of them. The display is silly, refreshing, touching, luminous and very endearing. At it’s best, its all of these at the same time. The performances are fabulous, the cast is the best and the storylines are both very realistic and very addictive, making every episode of Sex as memorable as the first.

My 2.5 year primitive son absolutely loves this DVD. Even his limited brother (8 months) enjoys watching it. It’s educational and a genuine mix of cartoon and live footage. It’s also nice that each episode is only about 15 minutes. That method I can allow him to recognize the video for shorter segments, without having to interrupt in the middle of an episode.

It is grand that my 3 year feeble daughter loves Mama Mirabelle’s Home Movies, but even better that my husband and I savor it too. Mama is delicious, intellegent and is not one of those kid videos that makes you cringe. A tremendous draw for you and your children to learn unusual and intersting facts about animals and their habitats. Mama also teaches the importance of caring for all creatures on our planet and how living things depend on each other for survival.

This is the one for which Robin Williams should have received an Oscar; for as Parry, the victim of a senseless tragedy, he is nothing short of knowing in “The Fisher King,” directed by Terry Gilliam and co-starring Jeff Bridges (who also gives an Oscar-worthy performance here) . Gilliam has created the perfect mood and atmosphere to deliver the account of successful radio talk-show host Jack Lucas (Bridges), and the homeless and mentally unhinged Parry, whose lives intersect in the wake of an act of unconscionable violence that leaves them both barely clinging to the memory of a reality that no longer exists for either of them. With this movie, Gilliam has deftly crafted a eye of the symbiotic existence of mankind and the impact of human nature upon the plot we all must section in a world growing smaller day by day. Through Jack’s eyes, Gilliam examines the nature of cause and conclude, and the results thereof, and Jack’s myth ultimately becomes Parry’s tale, and aptly illustrates how the needs of one become the necessity of another, and what it means to finally be able to examine beyond ourselves and delve beneath those layers of contemporary frivolity we all manage to get, which in the demolish are nothing more than pretentious insulations that preserve us from the things in life that really matter. Even as Jack’s absorb act of irresponsibility comes aid to haunt him and earn him inquire his beget values to the very core of his being, Parry receives the brunt of it all from the other ruin of the spectrum, with consequences even more dire, though for both the result of their shared circumstance is life-altering. Williams gives a masterful performance here that illuminates so well how thin the line between comedy and drama really is. He brings the complex, tragic figure of Parry to the camouflage flawlessly, with attitude, expression and even body language that is impeccable, and all without a single groundless moment to be found anywhere throughout (by comparison, even as satisfactory as he was in “Agreeable Will Hunting,” for which he received the B.S.A. Oscar, under halt scrutiny you’ll procure a moment or two there that do not ring factual) . This is quite simply the best work he’s ever done, before or since, and he’s given the cinematic world an unforgettable character that will undoubtedly compose a lasting impression on anyone who sees this film. And, though Williams grabs the lion’s portion of the spotlight here, he by no means overshadows Jeff Bridges, who has also created a memorable character in Jack. He brings a depth to this role through which he readily displays the many different levels upon which Jack works and lives, from the egotistical, self-centered to the compassionate; it’s like watching a struggle for domination going on within him, and waiting to net out which side will ultimately emerge triumphant. It’s an exemplary performance, and it’s a sinful miscarriage of justice that Bridges didn’t at least receive a nomination for Best Actor for this one. Proving, however, that justice does, at times, score it’s due, Mercedes Ruehl was awarded the Best Supporting Actress Oscar for her personable portrayal of Anne, the fulcrum upon which Jack and Parry dramatically balance their tender and tentative psyches. Like Bridges and Williams, she gives a performance here that is totally credible, and she’s a delight to leer. One of the strengths of this movie, in fact, is the astonishing performances; and it’s so gratifying to gaze such a capable legend brought to life and made so valid through artistic endeavor. In a supporting role, Michael Jeter demands to be singled out for his fragment as the homeless Cabaret Singer, and also Amanda Plummer, as the hapless and endearing Lydia, both of whom are fair additional parts of the aggregate that execute this such a substantial movie. With “The Fisher King,” Gilliam has given us a wonderfully textured morality narrative, both absorbing and entertaining and rich with metaphor and substance that will endure the test of time, because it is, in the destroy, a account for the ages. This is definitely one you do not want to let pass you by.

The Fisher King is a representational movie. It makes consume of Arthurian tale, and parallels the sage of the Fisher King with the lives of the two main protagonists – Parry (Robin Williams) and Jack (Jeff Bridges) . Symbolism and metaphorical techniques are utilisied extensively throughout the film, which makes it an extremely visual experience to peer. However, the symbolism extends beyond the visual plane, to a very psychological one. For example, Parry’s creation of a fantastical world tubby of ‘little tubby people’ and the ‘Red Knight’, is very powerful representative of his believe mental condition; the fantasy world, minus the Red Knight, represents Parry’s acceptance/ignorance of his mental trauma. At the same time the Red Knight is symbolic of the afflict and suffering as caused by the trauma itself.

Buy,Download, Or Stream The Fisher King! Click Here

Whenever Parry shows glimpes of sanity (lucid speech, dating, feeling appreciate again, etc.), the Red Knight always appears in his life. While the Red Knight is at bay Parry is not catatonic or overwrought by his trauma. To overcome/accept the trauma of seeing his wife murdered before his eyes, ultimately Parry has to confront the Red Knight and vanguish him. However, he lacks the insight and strength to do this on his occupy. Enter Jack – who ultimately feels responsible for Parry’s condition! Jack is the equivalent of the fool or simpleton from the epic of the Fisher King. Jack’s intent is one of redemption, while he is absorbed into Parry’s world. Eventually Jack begins to understand Parry’s need for the Holy Grail, which represents Acceptance of Loss. If Parry is able to beget the Holy Grail, then he shall be able to vanguish Insanity as represented by the Red Knight.

While there are elements of fantasy and Arthurian sage woven into this tale, there is also a theme of Christianity. Originally Jack is driven by a need to pick up the mature glory of his life when he was a successful talkback radio host. He wants that life attend and believes that by helping Parry, he will overcome his guilt, and thus be able to resume his weak life. Jack feels a counterfeit resolution in his life when he regains his passe life. However, ultimately, when Jack agrees to undertake the quest for the Holy Grail, only then do his motives become self-less. He helps Parry because he wants to, not because he needs to drive away his fill guilt – this is very considerable section of the Christian Doctrine.

On the whole, The Fisher King is an intricate weaving of comedy, drama and tragedy. The direction by Gilliam is faultless, his attention to detail evident especially in the Chinese Restaurant scene, where he borrows from Chinese film-making techniques, using the vertical dim bar wipe technique.

This is the type of movie which, on a superficial level, is only somewhat satisfying. However, it is on the psychological level where its trusty impact is felt – tragic, hopeful and uplifting. It is not the type of movie to ogle if you are expecting to be entertained!

With societies, as with individuals, it is often grand easier for us to ask the mistakes of others than it is to buy an impartial see at our maintain. In both cases, however, fair examination is indispensable to making obliging progress. Aftershock succeeds in providing us with details on a topic of which most Gone-With-the-Wind-watching Americans are unaware: the sinful violence and frequent chaos that followed Lee’s surrender.

Anyone who has actually studied slavery and the slave trade as they existed in America (as opposed to simply treating them as unavoidable footnotes in U.S. history) is well-aware that it is difficult to fathom the cost of those institutions in human life, considering the shortened life spans, high morbidity rates, high infant mortality rates, etc., of those affected. On the other hand, we are aware of the literally millions who perished (some through intentional killings) in the Middle Passage and the 620 thousand Americans who died in the Civil War.

With all of the above in mind, we might be tempted to minimize the significance of the bloodshed that occurred during the Reconstruction era and the entire century of strife that followed the war; Aftershock, however, does an outstanding job of illustrating the extinct. This film tells the stories of a variety of individuals and organizations, including the Arkansas National Guard; ex-Confederate soldiers; space officials; African American troops; displaced Southern civilians; and one of our nation’s oldest homegrown terrorist groups, the Ku Klux Klan. It also devotes a few (though far from enough) moments to the often overlooked role of Native Americans in the post-war years. It even touches on the frustration that some government officials felt with Andrew Johnson’s calamitous advance to the nation’s troubles.

This is one of the few documentaries on the years immediately following the war that I would mediate incorporating into a larger class project.

This DVD from the history channel is well done. It highlights some of the outstanding events of reconstruction after the Civil War including the founding of the KKK. It makes the point grahphically that while the North won the Civil War, the South won the period of Reconstruction. It is indispensable to understand this period of time in order to understand subsequent American History.

Robert Siodmak’s “The Spiral Staircase” is one of my all-time common thrillers. It was adapted from the book “Some Must Notice” by the prolific Ethel Lina White. 2 of White’s books had been made into films by Alfred Hitchcock. “The Wheel Spins” became “The Lady Vanishes”, and “Before the Fact” became “Suspicion”. “The Spiral Staircase” deals with a handsome creepy premise: An unknown killer has been murdering women with “afflictions”. (One victim was disfigured, another feeble-minded, another lame) . Helen, a young quiet servant girl working in a murky traditional mansion, is the killer’s next intended victim. The killer is in the house with her, but who is it? Siodmak, a master of film noir, holds your attention for approximately 85 minutes, and never lets go. All of the classic elements are here: Archaic dark house, thunderstorm, chiaroscuro lighting, eerie musical earn, luminous performances. The sets, by the scheme, are leftovers from Orson Welles’ “The Shapely Ambersons”, the music find by Roy Webb, who had still other goose-pimplers such as “The Cat People”, “I Walked With a Zombie”, “The Body Snatcher” and Hitchcock’s “Noted”. Dr. Samuel J. Hoffman on the Theremin is featured on this accept, providing added goosebumps. And the cast! Lovely Dorothy McGuire is obedient as the endangered Helen, in a house peopled by the likes of the very gargantuan Ethel Barrymore, the wooden George Brent, superb character actors Elsa Lanchester, Rhys Williams and Sara Allgood, attractive Kent Smith and Gordon Oliver, and resplendent Rhonda Fleming. Ellen Corby is in the film too, in a bit part-watch for her! Robert Siodmak was an noble “B” movie director, having made masterpieces on relatively miniature budgets. His other films include “The Killers”, “Phantom Lady”, “Son of Dracula”, the camp classic “Cobra Woman”, “Criss Spoiled”, and the Burt Lancaster romp “The Crimson Pirate”. So, in this age of over-inflated budgets, it’s a wonder and honor to recognize these well-made films from an era of almost non-existent special effects, modest budgets, and mountainous actors. The recount and sound quality on this DVD are excellent-very neat and crisp, so you can really be pleased the dusky Victorian sets and eerie musical secure. There are practically no extras on the disc-just the theatrical trailer, but who’s complaining? So, lock your doors and windows, because you never know who’s watching you, and maybe even eye under the bed, fair to be on the fine side, and see “The Spiral Staircase”-you will be thoroughly, enjoyably chilled!

One of the most creepy and effective thrillers from the immediate post war era. The movie is in many respects a precursor to current serial killer/stalker movies and weak dismay tactics that level-headed remain in consume more than 50 years later. The focus of the film is on a household where a cranky stale grandmother is bedridden and waiting to die, being looked after by a still nurse who is the serial killers positive next target as he clearly goes after victims with afflictions in his attempt to restore perfection and beauty to a inappropriate world. The director manages to conjure up an effective feeling of horror and claustrophobia – this is a long, long design from William Castle’s amiable ghost frolic The House on Jumpy Hill which played more like a farce than a thriller. The film is a limited reminiscent of another classic serial killer outing made worthy later in England, Peeping Tom and was clearly contrivance ahead of its time when it came out in 1946. The cast headed by Dorothy McGuire and George Brent but stare out especially for one of the screen’s immortal icons, Elsa Lanchester who will forever be remembered as The Bride of Frankenstein. The Spiral Staircase is a apt thriller, may be a touch over wrought by today’s standards, but effective, tense and fairly creepy. Perhaps, along with M, the enormous gargantuan granddaddy of the recent serial killer thriller. Far obedient to the horrible remake that was dished up in 1975.
